The diaspora’s grassroots education Solution

wHO WE ARE

Crayons & Culture is a grassroots education solution that puts the power and accountability back into the hands of the community by partnering with families, educators and practitioners to curate learning experiences through a culturally relevant and immersion based lens.  Our mission is to raise a generation of liberated and socially conscious activists who construct and experience a World that is universally free. Our vision is to create an alternative education ecosystem designed for the actualization of Black and Brown creative and intellectual genius.

History

Founded in 2015 by Chief Experience Curator, A. S. Carey, Crayons & Culture was created to solve the lack of cultural studies and lack of culturally relevant teaching practices in the public school education system.  We recognize, along with our predecessors, that learning must be personal, expansive and empowering.  As a result, we offer culturally, politically and technologically relevant experiences for future-ready learners.

Since 2015, we have held facilitated a plethora of workshops, experiences and events to include: Mid-Winter Recess Assata Book Club, Paintings with Berries, Roots and Leaves (A Tribute to George Washington Carver), Creative Kwanzaa, Waffles & Berries: A Toddler’s Brunch, and much more! In 2023, we gained our 501c3 status and expanded our organization to address the severe under education of Black and Brown children in government or philanthropic funded institutions that reside outside of community control. We are Black-led, Black-founded and Baltimore-rooted.

WHAT WE DO

We redefine privilege and educate the future.  How do we do that?  By democratizing access to immersion based experiences through workshops and community centered, micro-schooling strategies.  We fuel our grassroots education ecosystem with current and former classroom teachers, community educators and practitioners whose teaching practices are rooted in culturally relevant pedagogy. In 2024, we are launching our online platform that will connect families to teachers, non-profits, tutors, organizations that serve their students’ needs. Curated Experiences

Infant & Toddler Experiences

Early-learning experiences are the soil in which all forms of growth and self-actualization blossom.  Our Infant and Toddler Workshops are geared to expose children to culture, community, art and literacy.

Children & Youth Experiences

To be prepared for the 21st-Century, it is imperative that children and youth have the ability to critically think, collaborate and execute (TCE).  Our Children & Youth experiences are project (output) based, all the while leaving room for organic discovery and creation.

Family & Community Events

The foundation for a self-actualized child is to be nurtured in a self-actualized community.  For those purposes, Crayons & Culture puts a particular interest on supporting members in the family and community-at-large.  Check out our family and community section to learn more.
